women live in extreme poverty

In many of the places we work, a woman can end up the one person holding her family together. She may have lost her husband, or he may be unable to work or provide. Either way, she is left to carry it all — often with no savings, no income of her own, and few people she can turn to.

A handout keeps a family fed for a week. What actually changes things is a path forward. We start with emergency food and rent to steady the home, then give her the skills, tools and small bit of capital she needs to earn a proper income herself.

CBB Canada stays with each woman the whole way. Relief comes first, then vocational training, a starter grant and someone checking in for months afterward. Within a year, she isn't waiting on aid. She's providing for her family on her own.

Help one woman stand, and everyone who leans on her stands too.

How it works

A path out of crisis that she gets to keep.

We don't hand something over and walk away. Our four steps move a woman from the emergency in front of her to a living she can count on.

  1. Step 01

    Stabilise

Emergency food, rent and basics take away the daily panic, so a woman can think past the next meal.

  2. Step 02

    Train

Hands-on courses in tailoring, food production, livestock or retail give her a skill people will pay for.

  3. Step 03

    Equip

A starter toolkit or small grant turns that skill into money coming in for the household every day.

  4. Step 04

    Mentor

Months of local check-ins and support from other women keep the business growing and the family safe.

Common Questions

Questions we hear a lot.

How does training actually turn into income?
Once a woman finishes her course, we give her a starter toolkit or small grant matched to her trade, like a sewing machine, market stock or livestock. Then we mentor her for months, until the skill becomes a steady business she runs herself.
Who exactly does this program help?
Widows, and vulnerable women more broadly — including women whose husbands can no longer work or provide. We go by need, and nothing else. Any woman struggling to support her family in the communities we serve can be helped, whatever her faith, ethnicity or background.
Will I hear how the women I helped are doing?
We send regular updates from the field. If you sponsor a woman, you'll also get a progress report with photos and her story, wherever it's safe to share them.
Is my donation tax-deductible in Canada?
Yes. CBB Canada is a registered Canadian charity, and we issue official tax receipts for every eligible donation.
